Assessment Task 2: Drawing/ Notation
Through the readings of John Hejduk's 'Mask of Medusa' I have learnt the way that John Hejduk see's the city and architecture, Hejduks vision is clear throughout his book 'Mask of Medusa',1985 when he says "Taken as subjects for speculation, the effort of John Hejduk suggests that the work of architecture is not merely a functional, physical, material phenomenon. One can only approach these works through consideration of their originality, their eidetic and poetic nature. For, despite the formal casualties which are immanent to them, they remain open to a disconcerting, almost hallucinatory rupture with space, one which allows access equally to bewilderment or ecstasy." - John Hejduk, Mask of Medusa, 1985, United States of America. This quote is powerful as it explains John Hejduks vision of going beyond the practicality or purpose to serve function but more to serve as visional architecture where the audience can engage with it on a poetic scale.
Through my research I also came across another quote "... "being something other than known petalcups, musically rises an actual and sweet idea, the one absent from all bouquets" - John Hejduk, Mask of Medusa, 1985. This quote enforces my previous statement of how Hejduk goes beyond the normal to create something different yet beautiful.
In my work I was asked to draw a city as a catalogue of architectural monsters. Referring to 'Figure 1' I looked at the way Hejduk did many rough sketches of possible design with a black pen, there were no measure out drawings, they are rough sketches to illustrate his concepts he would also number them fro 1 to how ever many were in that specific masque.
As you can see in my work refer to 'Figure 3' I mimicked John Hejduk's 'Lancaster/ Hanover Masque' from John Hejduk, Mask of Medusa, 1985. I copied his method of the rough black lined sketches and the number of the monsters, creating a catalogue below notating what each numbered sketch refers to below.
My final work refer to 'Figure 3' which was heavily influenced by 'Figure 2', 'Figure 2' is John Hejduks, 'Berlin Masque' from his book, 'Mask of Medusa,1985'. This drawing is a detailed finer drawing than compared to 'Figure 1: Lancaster/ Hanover Masque' I used this technique of Hejduk's where he takes a rough sketch then takes that idea and refines it with detail. Which is what i did in my work refer to 'Figure 3'.
The design ideology behind my final work is inspire by John Hejduk's work as he focuses on geometric shapes and evident in my work I have used a triangular tower with a cylinder on top with a flag. I called this piece the 'Destination Tower' refer to 'Figure 3'.
The Destination tower is design to go where the goods line is as it is the geographical centre of UTS which would symbolise the idea of 'you are here' or 'you have reached your destination' which would allow the audience who would witness my architecture to acknowledge and reflect on their path to realise how far they have come and how they have got here to now make the most of being at the destination and then go beyond.
